Collection: Viking Shields

Viking Shields

Dating back to the Iron Age, Viking shields are composed of thin planks arranged in a circular pattern. At the center of the shield is an iron dome to protect the shield bearer's hand, and shield bosses are often the only components that survive after being underground for over a thousand years. Through the distinct shape of the shield boss, it is possible to determine a shield's age, as the design varied during both the Iron Age and the Viking Era. Norseman traditions mandated that warriors were buried with their shields, leading to shield bosses frequently being present in their graves.

From the burial ground at Gokstad, Norway, archaeologists conducted excavations, leading to the monumental discovery of an exceptional collection of Norseman shields. Amid the burial artifacts found alongside the remains of a prince or king and an entire ship, 64 round shields painted in yellow and blue garnered the most attention among the discoveries.

Research has shown that Viking shields are delicate and susceptible to damages caused by arrows, axes, and swords. Originally, the shields had an animal skin cover that would shrink when it dried, rendering them more robust. This adaptation made Viking shields more resistant to splitting. Thus it allows the use of relatively thin pieces of wood, resulting in lightweight shields that were still strong and protective.

What are some interesting viking shields facts?

Viking Shields

In addition to waterproofing with oil, Vikings also opted for leather covers for their shields. They weighed between 7kg and 10kg.

A second interesting fact is that a Norseman shield covered most of a warrior's body, leaving only the head and legs exposed. Due to this, many Viking warrior remains exhibit evidence of head and leg wounds.

What is the Viking shield name?

The shield was the primary defensive weapon of the Vikings. Their round shape earned them the name rönd. The shields measured approximately one yard in width

In addition, the vikings who had the financial capability donned helmets, chainmail or lamellar armor composed of sewn-together iron plates. However, the lower-status Viking warriors wore multiple layers of quilted linen or wool to shield themselves during battles.
